Leading up to Tuesday’s election day, United States Senator from Kansas Jerry Moran is still making his stops to different communities, businesses, and organizations. Last Thursday afternoon, Moran was in Ellinwood to tour the high school and in Great Bend to tour Barton Community College.

While at the college, Moran was refreshed on how Barton serves military soldiers at their remote campuses at Fort Riley and Fort Leavenworth. Moran wanted to know what Barton received in return for the classes given to soldiers.

The Barton campuses on the two forts provide college programs at no cost to more than 7,000 soldiers and military family members each year.

Barton Community College President Dr. Carl Heilman told the Senator that in return for the classes, Barton receives resources from the United States Army and Fort Riley including infrastructure, technology, and classroom supplies. The in-kind relationship develops a good partnership for the college that in turn leads soldiers to use Barton for other courses.

Barton’s partnership at Fort Riley has been in place for over 30 years and a smaller campus at Fort Leavenworth for four years. Many retired military personnel are hired on by Barton Community College to instruct the courses provided at the forts.
