The Great Bend school district’s summer lunch program served nearly 11,000 free lunches to children 18 and under this past June. The program was open to any child at all five public elementary schools.
USD 428 decided to expand their summer program into July at Park Elementary School only.
USD 428 Assistant Superintendent of Business and Operations Khris Thexton says through 19 days in July, the district’s food service department served 866 lunches at Park.

An average of 46 meals were given out per day proving a need to bring back the service next year.
The Great Bend administration also received school board approval to release bids to replace two vehicles in the district’s fleet.

The vehicles being replaced are eight years old and each have nearly 130,000 miles. Bid proposals for the six-passenger vehicles will be sent to the local dealerships: Marmies, Dove Chevrolet, and Doonan GMC. Since the vans are also used during Driver’s Education throughout the summer, a percentage of the cost will come from the Driver’s Education fund.
