A coach is someone to give you instructions and guidance and prepare you to be in the right spot and the right time. In sports, all players look for leadership from their coach to get better.
USD 428 decided all their students deserved a coach off the court too when they realigned teaching positions for the 2015-2016 school year. Great Bend’s administration assigned instructional coaches to each school in the district. An ELA, math, and technology coach were added to provide assistance to classroom teachers, increase teacher effectiveness, and monitor student progress.
Riley Elementary School ELA coach Tandi Mai says they have seen a steady improvement with the students with the multiple tests and addition of instructional coaches.

Mai tells us one of their main objectives is to get all the students on the same level of reading and writing before the children funnel into the same middle school. Keeping up with all the demands of Common Core has not always been easy but the outcome is well worth it.

Mai sets up interventions or classes for students that are struggling in a specific area where the students will continue to work on a deficiency until they catch back up to their peers.
