Two employees of the state’s mental hospital in Larned told legislators in April that staffing shortages have created dangerous conditions. The two workers said employees routinely work from 12 to 16 hours a day for five or six days a week, and parts of the hospital still are not adequately staffed.
Larned Mayor William Nusser wanted to help the situation and decided to submit an application at Larned State Hospital’s job fair. His application was accepted and he started training as a part-time Mental Health Developmental Disability technician this past Monday.

Nusser admitted overcoming the staffing shortages at Larned State Hospital is a major challenge but he feels the hospital is making progress.
He mentioned the newly structured float program offered by LSH allows community members a chance at a secondary income while helping others during a minimum of four eight-hour shifts per month.

Nusser says he has been thinking about the decision for the past couple of months and adds often times people are critical of the decisions that have been made instead of being part of the solution. Nusser will continue his day job as a tax accountant at Simmons & Simmons accounting firm in Larned.
