In previous weeks, staff at Cheyenne Bottoms and Kansas Wetlands Education Center were concerned about the water levels for the pools at Cheyenne Bottoms. The lack of precipitation became less of a worry after this past weekend’s heavy rains that saw parts of Great Bend receive over four inches of rainfall over the three-day stretch.
KWEC Manager Curtis Wolf says although the rain helps out, people would be surprised how well the wetlands adjust in dry or wet seasons.

KWEC had close to 125 people registered for this past Saturday’s Great Migration Rally. Every other year, the wetlands celebrates spring migration with the Rally to provide information about the hazards birds face during migration with an entertaining approach. The day culminated with a presentation from Falconer Nate Mathews and his golden eagle.

Mathews is currently the only falconer in Kansas hunting with an eagle and shared the story on his golden eagle’s capture and training.
