Nabholz ConstructionLess than a year after the school bond issue passed in a mail-in ballot, the Hoisington school district is ready to break ground on the site of the new Lincoln Elementary School. A ground breaking ceremony is scheduled for Thursday, April 21 at 10:45 a.m. just behind the current Lincoln School.

An $11.5 million dollar bond passed last June to build a new Lincoln Elementary and upgrade security at the other school buildings in Hoisington.

The construction company Nabholz Construction from Olathe will handle the project that will last until August 2017. Project Superintendent Mickey Starkey says most the work will begin after school gets out this May.

The construction cost came slightly under budget at $10.1 million dollars without the design included. The current Lincoln School was built in 1926 and will be replaced with a building to house 2nd – 5th grade.

Starkey will be a resident of Hoisington until the project is complete.

The security upgrades will be done before the start of school this fall and completion of the new Lincoln Elementary is expected to be finished by May 2017. When school gets out next year, USD 431 will be allowed to transfer items immediately to the new building. Demolition crews will knock down the old Lincoln School once it is empty.

The April 21 date will coincidentally be the 15th anniversary of the tornado that struck Hoisington on prom night.
