Community-Service-DayThe Great Bend community will receive an additional 900 plus workers on April 27. For the 4th year, Great Bend High School will unleash all their students to participate in Community Service Day for a chance to give back to the community.

GBHS science teacher and student council advisor Andrea Stalcup says her senior students heard about the event while at a conference in McPherson. The service day took off from there to include the entire school.

Students will conduct a car wash for contributions to the food bank as well as collect food outside Dillons. Community Service Day will also support Catholic Charities by holding a non-food pantry drive at Wal-Mart.

Great Bend High School and the student council assisted United Way of Central Kansas with literacy kits to prepare children entering kindergarten last year. This year, the student council will begin a book drive.

Stalcup says most of their jobs for Community Service Day have been finalized. If you have a project that would be good for the high school volunteers, you can contact Stalcup at the high school and she will try to squeeze the project into the day or schedule it for next year’s event.
