Some hackers spend a lot of time staying ahead of the game with sophisticated devices or plans.
One of the most recent scams that banks and gas stations are battling is a process referred to as skimming. Skimming fraud occurs when a criminal attaches a phony card reading device over a real card reader at ATMs or any place you slide your credit or debit card into.
Christy Klein serves as the head of marketing at Sunflower Bank in Ellinwood. Klein says the fake card readers look very similar to the real thing.

Once the suspect receives the card information from the skimmer, they can start draining the cardholder’s bank account.
Law enforcement authorities in Saline County are investigating a case from last Wednesday of a skimmer on an ATM at Sunflower Bank in Salina.
Klein urges everyone to inspect any card reader very closely.

Klein added that some thieves are placing cameras at locations where cardholders have to type in their PIN. Klein encourages everyone to place your hand over the keypad if you have to enter your PIN.
Citizens should constantly check their bank accounts for fraudulent activity.
