snowA copy of the Snow and Ice Control Policy was handed out at the October 3 Great Bend City Council meeting. Council members were told to review the policy and determine if there needed to be any changes to the report.

Great Bend Public Works Director Charlie Suchy says his staff and the city council inspect the policy each year.

There were no changes to the 2016-2017 Snow and Ice Control Policy from last year, and the city council approved the motion to adopt the policy as presented. The policy is always presented to the city council during the October meetings.

The policy gives a detailed description on what procedures will be taken and at what times during snow and ice storms. The city is divided into three priority lists for which streets are most important to keep clear. Suchy says Main Street is priority number one, and 10th Street, Broadway, McKinley, and Washington are all included in the first priority category.

In addition to salt and sanding, with any snowfall of two inches or more, plowing will begin on the Priority I street. When more than two inches of snow, the salt/sand mixture will be applied after plowing or grading operations are completed.

The snow removal crew for the Public Works Department consists of 9-11 employees.
