In late August, the Kansas Department of Agriculture held a workshop in Great Bend to discuss animal disease preparedness, biosecurity, and disease control activities.
The importance of emergency planning for an animal disease outbreak by state and federal agriculture officials provided an awareness of the many issues that must be considered for the response to a foreign animal disease event.
Barton County Emergency Management Director Amy Miller says the top thing to do is make sure you prevent the disease from spreading.

The featured speaker in Great Bend was Bret Marsh, DVM, and Indiana State Veterinarian. Dr. Marsh discussed lessons learned from the Avian Influenza Outbreak in Indiana which affected turkeys in the southwestern portion of Indiana in January 2016.
Miller stated most farmers are cooperative with outside agencies when a disease situation does hit.
